Greetings Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church!
My name is Sara Spohr, and I am excited and honored to be serving among you as Pastor of Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church.
I grew up on a small family farm by Morris, Minnesota. Now, I live in the Standish neighborhood in Minneapolis. I am eager to both live and serve the church in my neighborhood. I am grateful for how this neighborhood - the neighbors, small businesses, the orientation toward service, justice, and care for the earth - is so much like my community of origin. I am embracing all of the best ways that neighbors in this corner of Minneapolis care about each other and community.
I am a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota where I studied biology and was a member of the track and field team. I am also a graduate of Luther Seminary where my concentration was in Youth and Family Ministry. I served as a youth director for 4 years in Alexandria, Minnesota. I’ve been a pastor for 15 years serving ELCA churches in Lincoln, Nebraska and Roseville, Minnesota.
Much of my sense of call to ministry comes from two formative experiences. First, I grew up Lutheran surrounded by my extended family of non-Lutherans. The experience of deeply loving people with a different understanding of Christianity opened my mind in new ways to learn from the wisdom of others. It also gave me a deep appreciation of the Lutheran understanding of God’s unconditional love and grace. Second, I spent three summers on staff at Luther Crest Bible Camp. My experience there shaped my understanding of worship, that we worship in beloved community. It taught me the power of story, that telling our stories and God’s story connects us to one another and to God. It helped me to experience the ideas of church being lived out in our daily life together.
I continue to be shaped as a pastor by my colleagues, the people I lead and serve alongside, and the call to speak for justice in our community and world. But I remain grounded in the wisdom of others, the unconditional grace of God, worship in beloved community, God’s story, and faith in daily life - these continue to be the pieces of ministry that energize me and give me hope.
Six years ago I moved back to Minnesota to be closer to family and I live very near my sister and brother and six nieces and nephews. I love to hike, read, garden, and spend time with family and friends. This year my little back yard farm is growing corn, beans, squash, and tomatoes. I’m at my best when I have opportunities to explore, to create, or to immerse myself in a good story.
