Can art bring hope and healing? Do you remember when plywood went up on the windows of Minneapolis businesses in May of 2020? This was after the murder of George Floyd and voices rose up in a call for racial justice. It wasn’t long before this plywood became a blank canvas for artists of all kinds to begin to paint our city with hope. Art was everywhere! Through images and words and community appreciation there was a deeper empathy for a neighbor’s pain and a glimpse of hope for who we can be together. Can art really do all that?
During the season of Easter 2024, we looked at the resurrection through the lens of art, specifically the mural art in our city. How is God at work is this art? How does the art project despair or hope or both? What kind of peace do we make in our city with art, poetry, and the promise of hope?

Words over Windows is a book written by David Dyer-Bennet, a Minneapolis photographer, who captured the art with his camera, compiled it for the whole world to see. More about the book and about David can be found HERE!
